Aberrant or supplementary pancreas is an anomaly that occurs fairly rarely and is localized primarily in the small intestine, duodenum or ileum.
Its development proceeds with a mild symptomatic pattern, until there is an inflammation or an acute abdomen. Until then, a person is not disturbed by pain, discomfort or any other manifestations. The peculiarity of the aberrant pancreas is that its tissues are identical to the normal organ, and its excretory duct opens into the lumen of the small intestine or stomach.
It is possible to detect an anomaly with a full examination, using diagnostic methods such as:
- ultrasound;
- radiography;
- relaxation duodenography and others.
The most common supplementary pancreas is defined in diseases such as pancreatitis, calculous cholecystitis or gastric ulcer. It is then that you can see some signs of the presence of an aberrant gland, this is:
- bile secretion together with vomiting;
- vomiting after eating;
- stenosis of the twelve cecum.
In connection with the identity of the tissues of the additional and normal organ in the aberrant gland, inflammatory or ulcerative processes may occur. Sometimes it is possible to observe a bleeding in a zone of an exit of a pathology in a hollow organ.
Treatment of aberrant pancreas
The presented anomaly is dangerous because it is possible to malign the tissues. It is important to undergo a number of diagnostic measures in case of suspicion of the presence of an additional pancreas in order to exclude the possibility of malignant formation. After the conclusion of the diagnosis, an anomaly is surgically removed, the method of which depends on the location of the site, the form, the presence of the pathological process.
When the organ is placed superficially, endoscopic electroexcision is performed. If the organ has cysts, then the operation of fenestration of cysts is indicated.
Conservative treatment is also possible if there is no risk of a process turning into a malignant form. Prescribed drugs prolonged action - analogs of somatostatin. In parallel, symptomatic therapy is performed.
This anomaly is not dangerous until the development of pathological processes, therefore, if an aberrant pancreas is detected, treatment may not be performed, but the patient should be under the supervision of a specialist.
